Jazz Band
South East Junior High has three extracurricular jazz bands, made up of both 7th and 8th graders. There are two noncompetitive groups(Jazz Experience, Jazz Cooperative), and one competitive group(Jazz Studio). Students will perform a small placement demonstration, which will determine what jazz ensemble they will do best in.

Jazz Experience
Rehearsals: Wednesdays, 8:35 - 9:20(LHT); Thursdays, 7:50 - 8:40
This ensemble will be made up of musicians who have less jazz experience. If you play the following instruments, you may participate in the Jazz Experience: piano, guitar, bass(electric/upright), drumset, percussion, mallets, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, bari saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, and tuba.
The Jazz Experience will focus on jazz fundamentals, basic improvisation, and collaborative playing. This band will perform at the Works in Progress concert at South East Junior High, Coe College Jazz Summit, SEIBA Jazz Festival, a Nursing Home Tour, and the Jazz Showcase at Iowa City High School. Jazz Cooperative
Rehearsals: Mondays, 7:50 - 8:40; Wednesdays, 7:50 - 8:30
This ensemble will be made up of musicians who are more experienced in jazz, and/or advanced on their instrument. If you play the following instruments, you may participate in the Jazz Cooperative: Piano, guitar, bass(electric/upright), drumset, percussion, mallets, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, bari saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, and tuba.
The Jazz Cooperative will focus on intermediate jazz fundamentals, improvisation, and collaborative playing. This band will perform at the Works in Progress concert at South East Junior High, Liberty Jazz Festival at Liberty High School, Coe College Jazz Summit, SEIBA Jazz Festival, a Nursing Home Tour, and the Jazz Showcase at Iowa City High School. Jazz Studio
Rehearsals: Tuesdays/Fridays, 7:40 - 8:40
This ensemble will be made up of musicians who are more experienced, and dedicated to jazz. The Jazz Studio will be competitive, and require students to devote more outside of rehearsal commitment. The Jazz Studio will be made up of a limited number of students.
This band will perform at the Works in Progress concert at South East Junior High, Liberty Jazz Festival at Liberty High School, Coe College Jazz Summit(competition), SEIBA Jazz Festival, Elementary School Tour, and the Jazz Showcase at Iowa City High School. This group may prepare and record to perform at the Iowa Bandmasters Association Annual Conference, which would add a performance in May. Contact Mr. Prall for more information.
